There's no fixed calendar date for this one — it depends entirely on how hard your water is, which is a sentence nobody wants to hear about their own tap.
In a hard-water area, descale every four to six weeks. In a soft-water area, every two to three months is usually enough. The more reliable signal than any calendar, though, is the kettle itself: white flecks floating in the water once it's boiled, a chalky ring at the waterline, a kettle that takes noticeably longer to reach a boil than it used to, or tea and coffee that taste faintly mineral or flat. Any one of those means it's time, regardless of what the last descale date says.
The Vinegar Method, Step by Step
This is the one most people already have the ingredients for, sitting in the pantry next to the good olive oil.

Why the Inside of Your Kettle Turns White
Tap water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium — more of it in a hard-water area, less in a soft-water one — and those minerals stay invisible right up until the water boils. Heat drives off dissolved carbon dioxide, and without it, the calcium can't stay dissolved anymore. It comes out of solution as solid calcium carbonate and settles wherever the water was hottest, which in a kettle means the heating element and the walls closest to it.
That's also why a kettle scales up faster than, say, a saucepan you boil water in occasionally: a kettle repeats the exact same heat cycle on the exact same surface, day after day, so the deposit just keeps building in the same spot instead of getting knocked around and rinsed away between uses.
An acid — vinegar, lemon, citric acid — reverses that reaction. It converts the solid calcium carbonate back into a soluble calcium salt, which is why the crust dissolves into the liquid instead of needing to be scraped off. It's the same reason none of this works with plain hot water or dish soap, and the same reason a near-neutral cleaner won't do the job either, which brings us to the section a lot of appliance guides skip.
What Never to Use on the Inside of a Kettle
Steel wool and abrasive scouring pads are the biggest offenders. They'll scratch the interior surface, and those scratches give future limescale more texture to grip onto, meaning it comes back faster and clings harder than it did before. On a stainless steel kettle, the scratches also make the metal more prone to rust spots over time.
Bleach is the other one worth naming directly. It's not designed to react with mineral deposits at all, so it won't descale anything, and boiling a bleach solution in a sealed kitchen appliance is a good way to end up with a faint chlorine taste in your next several cups of tea. There's no version of "use a little extra" that fixes that.
Skip commercial descaling tablets you're unsure about, too, if the kettle has a plastic housing — some formulations are stronger than food-contact plastic is rated for. Vinegar and citric acid are gentle enough for every kettle material and cheap enough that there's no real reason to reach for anything else.
